Joist Hanger Range Guide

27 April, 2022

Joist Hangers are designed to securely attach timber beams to both masonry and timber structures. As a result Joist Hangers offer a more strong and versatile solution than using nails and screws alone.

At Vista, we offer two main types of Joist Hangers; Timber to Masonry Joist Hangers and Timber to Timber Joist Hangers.

Timber to Masonry Joist Hangers.

Our joist hanger range is designed for building into brickwork or blockwork. As standard all hangers are manufactured from 2.0mm thick pre-galvanised steel to BS EN 10346 : 2009, S280. The wide top flange design of these hangers offers increased loading capacity on masonry with a minimum crushing strength of 3.5N/mm² and above. All hangers feature a 75mm bearing surface and pre-punched side gussets to allow nail fixing into timber joists with 30 x 3.75 Sheradised square twist nails. Our range of Single Piece Joist Hangers includes: the SMH Joist Hanger Type S (Standard), SMH Joist Hanger Type R (Return), and SMH Joist Hanger Type D (Straddle).

SMH Joist Hanger Type S (Standard)

The Type S Hanger is designed for building into brickwork or blockwork. Available in various sizes.

SMH Joist Hanger Type R (Return)

The Type R Hanger  is designed for similar applications to the Type S but with the advantage of a return flange (25mm as standard) which greatly increases lateral support by giving the top flange additional resistance to pull out. We would recommend the use of Type R return flange hangers wherever possible for all timber to brick applications. As standard the return hanger is manufactured to suit 100mm, however any length of top flange is available to order.

SMH Joist Hanger Type D (Straddle)

The Type D Hanger is used when timber joist positions are directly opposite each other on either side of a wall or beam. As standard the straddle hanger is manufactured to suit 100mm blockwork, however any width is available to order.

Timber to Timber Joist Hangers

Designed for general fixings of timber to other timber components. Produced from galvanised steel to BS EN 10346 : 2009 DX51D + G275 as standard, or stainless steel available to order and are available in numerous sizes. Our range of Timber to Timber Joist Hangers includes: A190 Light Duty Hanger (Short Leg), A270 Light Duty Hanger (Medium Leg), B340 Medium Duty Hanger (Standard Leg), B460 Medium Duty Hanger (Long Leg), B610 Medium Duty Hanger (Long Leg), and the MINI Hanger.

A190 Light Duty Hanger (Short Leg)

A Lightweight hanger manufactured from 0.9mm thick galvanised steel. Suitable for joist depths up to 175mm.

A270 Light Duty Hanger (Medium Leg)

Manufactured from same material as above, but designed with wider 50mm strap legs to enhance performance with increased nail spacing. Suitable for larger joist depths of 150mm to 250mm. The A270 leg length can be adjusted by wrapping over to suit joist height.

B340 Medium Duty Hanger (Standard Leg)

Instead manufactured from 1.2mm thick galvanised steel with 50mm wide legs. Suitable for joist depths of up to 250mm. Design features a location tab on the hanger base, designed to allow quick and accurate alignment of the hanger. Holes in the bearing surface are within the tab, providing fixings points to the bottom edge of the header rather than the joist.

B460 Medium Duty Hanger (Long Leg)

Manufactured from same material as above, but is more suitable for I-Beam applications either faced fixed or wrapped over supporting joist. For loft conversion applications where the hanger extends below the supporting beam, a maximum drop of 75mm is recommended.

B610 Medium Duty Hanger (Long Leg)

Suitable for similar applications as above, but manufactured from 1.5mm thick pre-galvanised steel with 50mm wide legs.

MINI Mini Hanger

Ideal for trimming around ceiling hatches and other similar light duty applications. Manufactured from 0.8mm thick galvanised steel. Suitable for timber depth up to 100mm.
