Masonry to Masonry Wall Ties

21 January, 2021

Masonry to Masonry wall ties act to secure two leaves of a cavity wall to each other, allowing them to act as one structurally. A cavity tie usually incorporates some mechanism, (usually a change of shape) to discourage moisture moving across the tie. Most cavity ties are available with a dedicated clip to secure insulation (usually in sheet form) within the cavity. There are 4 standard classifications (Types) of masonry to masonry wall ties:

Type 4 – Light Duty Wall Tie

A light duty wall tie used in box-form domestic dwellings that have inner and outer leaves of a similar thickness. They are suitable for buildings with a maximum height if 10m and for flat sites where the basic wind speed is up to 27m/s and altitude is no greater than 150m above sea level. The VE4 light duty housing tie is our standard Type 4 tie and the Neutras range are low thermal conductivity wall ties.

VE4 Light Duty Housing Tie

Our VE4 is the only BBA approved type 4 stainless steel housing tie on the market. It has a multidrip feature to prevent moisture travelling across the cavity. The design means that the tie can be installed either way up. Available in lengths from 200-275mm..
Tested as Type A (sound)
Tested as Type 4 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

NEUTRAS-4 Low Thermal Conductivity Wall Ties

Low thermal conductivity wall ties with Eco Clip

Neutras, our BBA approved, low thermal conductivity wall tie helps builders comply with regulations on energy efficiency. Neutras ties are used in exactly the same way as traditional wall ties. The difference is, they are made from basalt fibre, a material up to 20 times less conductive than steel. Because of that, they help prevent ‘cold bridging’. Not only is basalt fibre much less conductive than steel, it’s also much stronger, giving Neutras ties 4 to 5 times the tensile strength of a stainless steel tie, and a higher compressive strength than similar fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) products. And, of course, it will never be affected by rust and corrosion.  It’s BBA certification, guarantees it meets, among other standards, 60 min fire resistance and NHBC technical performance requirements. Constant drip feature to prevent moisture travelling across cavity. Our Neutras Ties are available as type 1, 2 and 4 wall ties. Available as a Type 2 tie in lengths from 200-425mm..
Tested as Type B (sound).
Tested as Type 4, 2 and 1 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

Type 3 – General Purpose Wall Tie

As Type 2 below but where the basic wind speed does not exceed 27m/s. For a Type 3 tie ask for the V26 300mm long.

V26 long Traditional Double Triangle Wall Tie

Traditional Double Triangle wall tie previously to BS1243. Multidrip feature to prevent moisture travelling across the cavity. Design means the tie can be installed either way up. Available as a Type 3 tie in lengths from 275-300mm for cavities from 126-175mm.
Tested as Type B (sound)
Tested as Type 3 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

Type 2 – General Purpose Wall Tie

A general-purpose wall tie for applications such as small commercial buildings and domestic properties. They are suitable for buildings with a maximum height of 15m and for flat sites where the basic wind speed is up to 31m/s and altitude is not greater than 150m above sea level. When you’re ordering Type 2 ties, ask for V26, EN2, NEUTRAS-2, V26 or TPT.

VE2 – General Purpose Wall Tie

This BBA approved general purpose wall tie has a multidrip feature to prevent moisture travelling across the cavity. The design means that the tie can be installed either way up.  Available in lengths of 275mm.
Tested as Type B (sound)
Tested as Type 2 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

EN2 General Purpose Wall Tie

This BBA approved general purpose wall tie has a multidrip feature to prevent moisture travelling across the cavity. Design means the tie can be installed either way up Available in lengths from 200-250mm.
Tested as Type B (sound)
Tested as Type 2 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

NEUTRAS-2 Low Thermal Conductivity Wall Ties

Low thermal conductivity wall ties with Eco Clip

Neutras, our BBA approved, low thermal conductivity wall tie helps builders comply with regulations on energy efficiency. Neutras ties are used in exactly the same way as traditional wall ties. The difference is, they are made from basalt fibre, a material up to 15 to 20 times less conductive than steel. Neutras has been awarded BBA certification, guaranteeing it meets, among other standards, 60 min fire resistance and NHBC technical performance requirements. Constant drip feature to prevent moisture travelling across cavity. Our Neutras Ties are available as type 1, 2 and 4 wall ties. Available as a Type 2 tie in lengths from 200-425mm.
Tested as Type B (sound).
Tested as Type 4, 2 and 1 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

V26 Traditional Double Triangle Wall Tie

Traditional Double Triangle wall tie previously to BS1243. Multidrip feature to prevent moisture travelling across the cavity. Design means the tie can be installed either way up. Available as a Type 2 tie in lengths from 150-250mm for cavities from 0-125mm.
Tested as Type B (sound)
Tested as Type 2 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

TPT Two Part Ties

As a result of problems experienced over wider cavities (150mm to 375mm) and their weight causing long ties to overturn, the Vista two part tie allows larger cavities to be spanned, (up to BS EN 845 – 1 standard for a type 2 tie). The shorter section is built into the inner leaf as construction proceeds, whilst the longer section is locked into the inner section and built into the outer leaf as it lifts. Available in lengths from 300-500mm.
Tested as Type B (sound)
Tested as Type 2 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

Type 1 – Heavy Duty Wall Tie

A heavy-duty wall tie suitable for most building sizes and types. These ties are rigid and should not be specified where large differential movements are expected or low strength masonry units are in use. They are suitable for buildings of any height and most UK locations. Vista Type 1 wall ties include the VST1, VE1, VS4, VS6 and the NEUTRAS-1.

VST1 Heavy Duty Formed Safety Tie

The constant drip feature prevents moisture travelling across the cavity. Supplied with visibility caps that are used to cover the protruding end of VST1, remove when building external masonry.  Available in lengths from 200-300mm.
Tested as Type B (sound).
Tested as Type 1 (strength) to BS EN 845-1.

VE1 Heavy Duty Safety Vertical Twist Tie

Vertical twist feature to prevent moisture travelling across the cavity.  Available in lengths from 150-300mm.
Tested as Type B (sound)
Tested as Type 1 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

VS4 Heavy Duty Flat Safety Tie

Used in full fill cavities or where the prevention of moisture travelling across the cavity is not an issue. Also for collar jointed walls.   Available in lengths from 150-300mm.
Tested as Type B (sound)
Tested as Type 1 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

VS6 Heavy Duty Dripped Safety Tie

Drip feature to prevent moisture travelling across the cavity (taking less space than vertical twist). Drip position 90mm from safety end as standard.  Available in lengths from 150-300mm.
Tested as Type B (sound)
Tested as Type 1 (strength) to BS EN 845-1

NEUTRAS-1 Low Thermal Conductivity Wall Ties
